Why do Hindus Celebrate Govardhan Puja?

Hindus celebrate Govardhan Puja, also known as Annakut or Annakoot, as a part of the larger Diwali festival. This particular celebration holds significance for several reasons:

1. Legend of Govardhan Hill:
The primary story associated with Govardhan Puja is from the Bhagavata Purana, a Hindu scripture. According to the legend, Lord Krishna once witnessed the residents of the village of Vrindavan preparing elaborate offerings for a grand sacrifice to please Lord Indra, the god of rain.
Lord Krishna questioned the need to appease Lord Indra, emphasizing that Mount Govardhan, which provided the people of Vrindavan with fertile land and pastures, deserved their worship and offerings instead. He suggested that they worship the Govardhan Hill, as it was the true source of their sustenance.

2. Lifting of Govardhan Hill:
In response to Lord Krishna's advice, the people of Vrindavan decided to follow his counsel. They prepared a massive feast, piling up an array of food items and offerings in front of Govardhan Hill.

Lord Krishna, in his divine form, then assumed the weight of the entire Govardhan Hill on his little finger to shelter the people of Vrindavan from a devastating rainstorm sent by Lord Indra. This act is known as "lifting the Govardhan Hill" or "Govardhan Parvat."

3. Significance of Protection: Govardhan Puja signifies the protection and nourishment that the natural environment and earth provide to humanity. It teaches a lesson of environmental responsibility and the importance of living in harmony with nature. This story also highlights that devotion to God can be expressed in many forms, not just through elaborate rituals.

4. Feasting and Offerings: On Govardhan Puja, people prepare an array of vegetarian dishes, representing the large mountain of food that was offered to Govardhan Hill. These offerings include various sweets, savories, and traditional dishes.

5. Worship of Govardhan Hill: In some regions, especially in Mathura and Vrindavan, a replica of Govardhan Hill is made from cow dung and clay, decorated with flowers, and worshipped. Devotees circumambulate this replica as a symbolic gesture of paying respect to Govardhan Hill.

6. Community Celebrations: Govardhan Puja is a time when communities come together to participate in the rituals and share the offerings. It fosters a sense of unity and togetherness among people.

7. Gratitude and Thanksgiving: The festival is also a time for expressing gratitude to nature, cattle, and the agricultural abundance that sustains human life.
