The Titan Submersible story is the perfect combination of science, sleuthing, hubris, and morbid curiosity and I think that is why it has captivated much of the world.
Did they know the implosion was coming?
Sadly, I think they may have had some indication that the carbon fiber was failing. How much in advance is probably going to be argued for a long time. What we can be stated with certainty is that even at a shallower depth the end was instant.
Now, what led to the Titan's hull failure?
It seems pretty obvious now that it had everything to do with the use of carbon fiber in the capsule that held the passengers.
As the wreckage was being brought up you can see that piece is clearly not part of the recovered parts. Me being a junior sleuth assumes that it was completely destroyed during the implosion.
Perhaps new information will emerge, but at the moment I think its safe to side with the material scientists out there who agree that it should have never been used for this application (or at least been tested more thoroughly).
