You spent good money on those jeans, do you really want to do it yourself? Watch as we explain how to professionally taper denim jeans using a Caballo (Feed-off-the-arm, 3-needle chainstitch machine) sewing machine and Union Special at the hem.
Some jeans are sewn with an overlock machine and single needle stitch on the inseam while others are sewn with flat-felled (lapseam). The lap seam is more common on men’s jeans and work pants because it is the stronger of the two types. The overlock machine with a single needle stitch is more common on women’s jeans and tighter fitting jeans in general because the overlock is less bulky and more flexible.
This video explains the process in detail of tapering jeans that are constructed with a lap seam. In most of the videos we observed on the web, the tapering is done at the outseam, which is not the correct way to taper jeans or pants. Especially if the jeans or pants are produced in selvedge fabric. Usually, tapering is done on the outseam out of bare necessity because the sewer does not have to right equipment to taper at the inseam. The lap seam scares them. That’s understandable. However, if you are not sewing on a home machine, professional tapering should always be done using the same techniques and equipment as the manufacturer to ensure the best possible outcome.
