Large families and overcrowding was common in Victorian London for the poor, because money was short and rent was high. This is the story of the childhood of William Crooks who grew up in the poverty of East End London, but his tough beginnings would lead to the London County Council, Labour mayor of Poplar and later MP for Woolwich. He is remembered for his campaigning work against poverty and inequality – no doubt informed by the hardships he faced in childhood, which he never forgot – some of which you will discover today in an account of the hunger his family endured living in a one-roomed house in the 1850s.
