Nandyal is a city in Kurnool district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a municipality and the headquarters of Nandyal mandala in Nandyal revenue division.The town was originally called Nandaluru. It derives its name from Nandi, the Mount of Lord Siva. Aalaya means house/ dwelling in Sanskrit. Since it is surrounded by nine sacred temples of Shiva (Nava nandi temple) it is called Nandi Aalaya which, over period of time, became Nandyala or Nandyal, the present name of the place. These nine temples are Prathama nandi temple, Naga nandi temple, Soma nandi temple, Surya nandi temple , Garuda nandi temple, Krishna nandi temple (also called Vishnu nandi temple ), Mahanandi temple, Vinayaka nandi temple and Shiva nandi temple. These temples draw pilgrims from various places. Nandyal had a population of 211,424 at the time of the 2011 Census.

During the time of Maha Shivaratri festival and other major festival time many people come to visit nandyal or Nandyala town to visit the nine nandi temples . it starts from Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Temple nandyal or Ayyappa Swamy Temple Nandyal , where Shiva idol is there and people visit first there and pray and then go to each nandi temple in order of visiting first nandi temple and ending with nine nandi temple and after visiting all these temple will come back to Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Temple nandyal or Ayyappa Swamy Temple Nandyal where they started the journey and finish the journey.

Mahanandi temple is the sixth nandi temple among the nine nandi(nava nandulu) temple in nandyal. Inside of Mahanandi temple is the Vinayaka nandi temple which is the seventh nandi temple among the nine nandi(nava nandulu) temple in nandyal. Mahanandi, is a village located east of the Nallamala Hills near Nandyal, Kurnool District, Andhra Pradesh, India. It is surrounded by forests. Within 15 km of Mahanandi, there are nine Nandi shrines known as Nava nandulu. Mahanandi is one of the Nava Nandis. The Mahanandiswara Swamy Temple, an important shrine, is located here. Mahanandi is about 21 km from Nandyal. The nearest airport is at Hyderabad, which is about 215 km from Kurnool, and the nearest railway station is at Nandyal.There are 2 routes to reach Mahanandi from Nandyal town. One route via Thimmapuram and is the shortest, around 17 km from bus stand. Another route, via giddalur road you need to take left diversion at Boyalakuntla cross and it will be around 24 km distance from nandyal.
