'Saving Kyloring' is a short film about the latest developments in recovery efforts for Western Australia's most endangered bird - the western ground parrot, known as 'Kyloring' in the local indigenous language.
They were once fairly widespread around coastal areas of Western Australia - from Jurien Bay to Israelite Bay - but after years of habitat loss and destruction, there are now less than 150 of these beautiful parrots left in only one small location on the south coast of WA.
Until now! A wild-to-wild translocation to establish another population has been recently carried out by scientists from the Western Australian Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions along with project partners Perth Zoo, BirdLife Australia, South Coast NRM, and others, who have been working hard for over a decade to save it from extinction.
We produced this short film about this amazing work for the Friends of the Western Ground Parrot, a not-for-profit established to raise awareness of this critically endangered species. Several years ago we made a full length documentary called 'Secrets at Sunrise' telling of the dramatic fight to save the western ground parrot over the past 2 decades.
