The German composer Gustav Lange (1830-89) was very popular in the 19th century for 'Blumenlied' , 'Edelweiss' and other salon pieces. Unlike many of his contemporary composers for the parlour and salon who racked up apparently large catalogues of works by giving individual opus numbers to short pieces, Lange was genuinely prolific, and some of his many opuses include considerable sets of pieces. This attractive piece was suggested to me by a viewer. There is something about the agitated central section that reminds me of Liszt's piano transcription of Wagner's 'O Star of Eve'. The artwork on the US edition which I used for this video shows a young man just disembarked from a rowing boat by a lake with a young lady in his arms. I should imagine that this piece could have been very popular with 19th century lovers - maybe some troths were even plighted to its strains!
