This series takes viewers through three different periods in Nara’s career, including his early art practice, questions narratives of “Japanese-ness” at the turn of the century, and the impact of the 2011 Great Tohoku disaster on Nara’s art. Presented by Yeewan Koon, Chair of the Department of Art History at the University of Hong Kong and author of Yoshitomo Nara, a recently published monograph that looks at his work from the last three decades.
This session covers Nara's upbringing in northern Japan and key influences in his life.
