(13 Apr 2019) Opposition supporters rallied in Albania's capital, Tirana, on Saturday, to again call for the government's resignation and an early parliamentary election.
Thousands of supporters from around the country showed up at the main Martyrs of the Nation boulevard, holding anti-government posters, and throwing flares, firecrackers, paint and other projectiles at police.
In the pouring rain, many also held umbrellas with a "Go" slogan printed on it.
As they had done during previous protests, demonstrators broke through the police cordon at the main entrance of the government building, but did not try to open its doors this time.
Police refrained from using teargas at the government building, but used it later when demonstrators tried to storm the parliament building.
The interior minister denounced the violence, and said five police officers were injured.
Some demonstrators and a few journalists were also affected by the teargas.
The centre-right Democratic Party-led opposition accuses the Socialist Party government of Prime Minister Edi Rama of being corrupt and linked to organised crime, charges which the government denies.
In protests since mid-February, opposition supporters have repeatedly tried to enter the parliament or government buildings and police have responded with teargas and water cannon.
