Mobile Bay has many moods, largely based on the weather and the tides. At high tide, with a strong south wind, water is pushed northward to sometimes flood parts of the causeway. At low tide, with a strong north wind, water near the causeway is pushed southward to reveal the muddy bottom of a very shallow part of the Bay. Hurricanes and tropical storms passing east of Mobile Bay also push water southward while those passing west of Mobile Bay push the water northward to often flood the causeway.
