STORYLINE:
Pro-Tibet demonstrators rallied against China's human rights record in San Francisco on Tuesday, spurred on by the arrival of the Olympic torch in the city earlier in the day.
AP Television filmed a group of Buddhist monks and their supporters preparing for the "Tibetan Freedom March" early on Tuesday.
Some adults and children wore headbands reading "Tibet" and carried protest signs calling on China to recognise Tibetans' human rights.
"They don't let us say anything. They won't let us practice (religion), they're shutting down all the monasteries and nunneries," said Tiuptan Donyo, a Tibetan monk living in San Jose, California.
"There are many monks and nuns starving to death in their own monasteries," he added.
The Olympic torch arrived for its only North American stop amid heavy security, a day after its visit to Paris descended into chaos and activists scaled the Golden Gate Bridge to protest against China.
Meanwhile, International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said the body's executive board would discuss on Friday whether to end the international leg of the Beijing Olympic torch relay because of widespread protests.
The torch's global journey was supposed to highlight China's growing economic and political power.
