During the Second World War, hundreds of thousands German (and Italian) PoWs were shipped to the United Kingdom, and even the United States, to be detained and await their trial. In March 1945, one of these PoW camps, 'Camp 198', or Island Farm, saw the most infamous and largest escape of German PoWs during the entire war.
