Just west of Chicago Illinois is a major expressway interchange that is being reconfigured to handle expected traffic growth. I-294, the Tri-State Tollway, is getting most of the attention and the ramps to I-88 The East-West (Reagan) Tollway, and I-290 the Eisenhower Expressway. The old ramp configuration was mostly clover-leaf ramps that had speed limits of 25 MPH. As these ramps were very tight and slow, traffic would back up off the ramps into the main stream of traffic. There Have been multiple fatal accidents on or near these ramps. Additionally, these old ramps were a single lane of traffic. The new highway ramp configuration will have two lane ramps and the speed limit on these ramps will be the same as the expressway. The idea is that vehicles will now be able to interchange without slowing! This suggests a greater amount of safety plus people will save time and fuel as they won't be stuck waiting for traffic to move. These new ramps have to be very long to handle the greater speeds and the Civil Engineers are creating tunnels and fly overs for this project. If you watch closely, you'll see where and how the new ramps feed into the current expressway configuration. Construction should be done by 2025 after which there will a short rest and then a entire new bit of construction will begin.......!
