It’s the most wonderful time of the year – but it can be tricky for your dog. Watch this video from Petplan to see how you can make Christmas as easy as possible for your dog.
For older dogs, getting up repeatedly to great guests can be hard on stiff joints and with so many new people, nervous dogs can get worried. Gently take your dog away if he’s worried or wound up.
Then there’s all that noise. Loud and unusual noises can be scary for all pets so be prepared and make sure your dog has a peaceful place to relax. This place is just for your dog – it’s a sanctuary.
Don’t forget your dog’s usual routine like toilet breaks and walks – this gives you both a chance to escape the chaos!
With branches for climbing, shiny toys and tasty morsels, temptation is everywhere at Christmas. To prevent accidents secure your tree at its base, hang fragile decorations higher up and avoid chocolate, poinsettias, holly and mistletoe (they’re all poisonous to dogs). Pine needles are problematic for paws so choose an artificial or non-drop tree and vacuum regularly.
Christmas smells fantastic, but many festive foods are dangerous for dogs. Cheese, grapes, cooked bones, onion and garlic can make dogs ill. Mince pies, fruitcake and chocolate should be avoided too. A small treat is fine but stick to a normal diet overall to avoid tummy upsets.
Christmas is a time for giving and Auntie’s gift may be irresistible to a young dog – give him his own instead!
Wishing you and your pet a healthy, happy Christmas.
