Have you guys ever watched Gone Fishing? It’s a Moana short film that originally was going to be a trailer. So I worked on these shots before main production of the film began.
The reason I’m posting this is to tell the story of Fish Bill, the co-star of the short. He was a background fish, never intended to be a main character until the idea for the trailer was pitched.
He barely had any rig controls and almost no facial controls at all. So I got these shots of him sliding into Maui’s mouth and it was an exercise in PATIENCE.
I had to rework the shot 7 times, mostly for little changes. But because he was only ever intended to barely move his fins in an ambient swim motion, I had to put blend shapes on his fins for nearly each frame to get the motion of him resisting sliding into his mouth, EACH time I made any body changes. (No IK). Also blend shapes for his mouth and contact deformer for where his body touches Maui.
THEN I started animating the mouth opening shot and noticed that he didn’t have any anatomy in the back of his throat for the close up, and asked if we could get a uvula. Modeling was under a tight deadline finishing up assets for the film itself and best they could do was just add a separate object for the uvula and hope it blends in with his throat when lit. It looked…not ideal. Haha.
So blendshapes again to the rescue! I’m a big advocate of being multi-disciplined so you can help out with things like this when the team is under deadline. You never know where it might come in handy. Fish fins or demigod uvulas.
