Germs are known to live on surfaces for 9 days, so here are some tips and best practices to use when you have to go out for supplies.
Tips for Inside the Grocery Store:
Touch as little as possible and distance yourself from other shoppers in the store, and remember good hygiene while you're in the store like, covering a cough with your elbow or sneezing into a tissue. Remember to wash your hands as soon as possible after touching items and surfaces in the store. The most important thing, of course, is to not touch your face until you can be sure your hands are clean.
Make sure you have extra tissues, disinfecting wipes, and hand sanitizer on you before you leave the house
Wear gloves or use hand sanitizer before, during and after your trip to the store
Cover your hair
Cover your mouth
Wear glasses or protective eye gear
Bring your own shopping bags
Do not use cash if that can be avoided
When you Get Home from the Store, Gas Station, ATM, Etc:
Wash hands immediately when you get home, or even take a shower
Throw your clothes into the laundry or dirty hamper
Wipe down your car and car handles and target clean areas in your home that might have been touched before you could properly wash your hands.
Also, if you are using a delivery service for food, try and utilize "contact-free delivery" options available with services like Postmates and Instacart. People can leave the food outside your door, which helps to protect the delivery person as well as you.
Tips for Food You are Bringing Into the House:
Should you be afraid that the box of macaroni and cheese you just brought into your house was sneezed on or touched by someone with the virus? Even though there is no real data on this, The Doctors say yes as it's better to be safe than sorry. Best practices are you should wipe down boxes, cans, jars and any packages coming into the home. In terms of fruit and vegetables? A regular good washing should do the trick. Do not apply cleaning products or hand sanitizer directly to fruits and vegetables or ready-to-eat foods.
After handling all of the boxes that have come into your house, wash your hands. If you have an item you don't know how to clean or disinfect, give it a 9-day timeout.
