Just like North America, countries across Europe are breaking records for daily COVID cases. France confirmed over 200,000 new infections for today for a second day in a row. It’s now introducing some controversial new measures to stop the rapid spread of the Omicron variant. And when it comes to deaths Russia has now overtaken Brazil, second only to the U.S.
As the fast-spreading Omicron variant rages through Western Europe officials and experts in low-vaccinated Eastern Europe anticipate a post-holiday explosion of COVID-19 cases in much of the region.
Many countries in Eastern Europe only recently emerged from infection waves that put a catastrophic strain on health care systems and at times have tallied some of the highest pandemic death rates globally.
