The Linwood Fire Department in Wellesley Township, Ontario, put on a simulated kitchen oil fire at an October 2010 Open House.
A steel pot with three cups of oil is heated on a propane burner. The oil starts to boil (oil vapour is visible) and eventually ignites.
A fireman in full gear demonstrates the effect of putting a cover on the pot. This suppresses the fire which would allow the heat source to be turned off [which is not done here]. Removing the cover allows the fire to re-ignite.
The fireman then adds a small can of water to the pot of oil. The results are dramatic and could result in severe burns, if not death.
The complete demo took an estimated 10 minutes to heat the oil to ignition temperature. We show slightly more than a minute here.
