High levels of air pollution could finally be brought under control after a court ruling.
The European Court of Justice says the UK’s own Supreme Court can force the government to meet EU nitrogen dioxide limits as soon as possible.
The targets should have been reached in 2010, but earlier this year the government admitted that in 16 areas - from Glasgow to Southampton - pollution would continue to break EU law until at least 2020.
Alan Andrews, a lawyer at the environmental group Client Earth which brought the original action, says the ruling is a "massive victory".
