Abortion is a very controversial issue in the United States with many different arguments being offered on both sides. This video attempts to highlight both a pro-choice and a pro-life argument from two credible philosophers.
The pro-choice argument from the world of philosophy comes from Judith Jarvis Thomson in her essay, A Defense of Abortion. In it, Thomson proposes a thought experiment entitled The Unconscious Violinist. Imagine you wake up next to an unconscious violinist with a tube connecting the both of you. The Society of Music Enjoyers explain that they've kidnapped you because the violinist has a fatal kidney ailment. The only way to heal him is if you're hooked up to him for 9 months, then he'll be healthy again. This argument highlights the difference between a person's right to life and a person's right to compel another to act in a certain way.
The pro-life argument from the world of philosophy comes from Don Marquis in his essay, Why Abortion is Immoral. In it, Marquis asks why killing is wrong in general? He concludes that killing is wrong because it deprives someone of their "future like ours." If that premise is agreeable, then it's therefore wrong to deprive a fetus of their future like ours.
