William McTaggart (1835-1910) was one of the most significant Scottish landscape painters of the later nineteenth century. His painting 'The Storm’ (1890) is one of the most popular paintings in our national collection, and is arguably his masterpiece. Throughout his career he frequently returned to his home region of Kintyre. Here, artist Lachlan Goudie describes his own experience of visiting the windswept shores where McTaggart worked, and how this has enhanced his appreciation of his work.
