Dr. John Bergeron walks over the causes of fact accumulation in the chest, including gynecomastia and false or pseudo gynecomastia. Then we'll walk over four cases so you can see the kind of results you can expect from lipo. As always, your results may vary.
The cases begin at 3:02, but we'll walk over some important information on differentiating between gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia first.
Gynecomastia is often incorrectly used (especially online) as a catch-all term for enlargement of the male chest. Severe gynecomastia can in fact give you actual male breasts or man-boobs, and is a hormonal issue that cannot be resolved by liposuction or exercise alone. But many cases we see in the office are largely a result of the body’s natural fat storage rather than a purely hormonal issue. We call this pseudogynecomastia, false gynecomastia, or sometimes adipomastia - and liposuction by itself can be an option for these cases.
Many gynecomastia cases involve a combination of both glandular and fatty tissue. The appropriate course of treatment in these cases is determined by the amount of glandular tissue vs. the amount of fatty tissue. If there's a lot of fat, and not a lot of glandular tissue, then liposuction can give good results alone. If there is a substantial amount of tissue, then tissue removal will be required and we generally will not recommend liposuction alone.
