I compare the new 2018 15.4" MacBook Pro 2.9GHz i9 with AMD Vega 20 4GB graphics and 32GB of DDR4 RAM in terms of video editing using Adobe Premiere Pro and Blackmagic Davinci Resolve 15 and compare it to the 2017 iMac Pro with 8 core Xeon processor, 32GB of DDR4 RAM, and AMD Radeon Vega 56 8GB graphics.

The codecs that are tested and compared are 4K h.264 footage from Sony cameras like the a7S2 and A7III as well as 8-bit h.265 footage and 10 bit 4K 60 HEVC h.265 codec from the Fujifilm X-T3 which is very difficult to edit in FCX.

Along with those I test stabilization, timeline smoothness and rendering, Canon Cinema RAW Lite from the C200 and RED .R3D RAW 4.5K from Red RAVEN.

I'm really surprised by how well the Vega 20 2018 MacBook Pro performs in terms of video editing in this comparison. Yes the iMac Pro is faster in some tests but not all, and for general video editing it will get the job done for most people. If you need portability the Macbook Pro is definitely a viable option for filmmakers.
