Join interior designer Alfredo Paredes on a tour of his family’s laid-back retreat on Shelter Island, the quietly stylish neighbor of Long Island’s glitzier Hamptons towns. Originally built in 1870 as part of a grand Victorian resort, the charming home perched on Dering Harbor is now where Alfredo, his husband, and their two children spend their summers playing tennis, hosting lemonade stands, and relaxing by the water.
After first overseeing a major renovation of the historic house, Paredes—who spent 33 years at Ralph Lauren Home as the eye behind the brand’s stores, restaurants, and the occasional Lauren residence—got to work filling it with a mix of antiques, flea-market finds, and furnishings that are able to withstand a few wet bathing suits (or a wet dog!). The result is an interior that’s weathered and attenuated and saves room for whimsy, but where nothing calls too much attention to itself. And with views like that, there’s no need to overdo it!
