On this day in 1981, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher reacted to news of the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, who had been gunned down the day before.
Sadat's legacy was complex and controversial. His efforts to reach a peace agreement between Egypt and Israel earned him widespread admiration among Western leaders, as did his "pivot" towards the West and away from the Soviet Union in the Cold War. The same moves, however, brought him enemies. He was assassinated on 6 October 1981 by a group of Sunni Islamist Jihadists who opposed his peace treaty with Israel.
