Subscribe now so you don't miss any updates. A team of researchers International scientists decoded a collection of enigmatic letters belonging to Mary of Scots. Written between 1578 and 1584, the letters were part of a sophisticated system of ciphers that combined letters and symbols, and were exchanged between Mary, Queen of Scots, and Michel de Castelnau Mauvissière, the French ambassador to England.
The letters were found by researchers in the archives of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris. The decoding of the 57 letters revealed unprecedented information about the queen's life and captivity, including details about her health conditions and her struggle to be freed.
Who was Mary of Scotland?
Mary Stuart, or Mary I, was an important historical figure in 16th-century Europe, being Queen of Scotland from 1542 to 1567. She inherited the throne at just six days old after the death of her father, King James V, and faced a number of political and religious challenges throughout his reign, including pressure to marry and produce an heir. She was forced to abdicate in favor of her son, James VI of Scotland, in 1567 and was subsequently imprisoned by her cousin Elizabeth I of England for nearly 20 years.
Mary was eventually executed for conspiracy in 1587 and became a tragic and controversial figure in British history. Her life continues to intrigue scholars and the general public to this day. Decoding the letters she wrote while imprisoned adds another chapter to the queen's already complex legacy. Decoding the letters involved a team of international researchers led by computer scientist and cryptographer George Lasry, a member of the DECRYPT Project, an organization dedicated to the decoding of historical manuscripts. The project involved the use of computational techniques and manual comparison of the text with other historical manuscripts to decipher the cipher system. The deciphered letters revealed details about the queen's health and the appalling conditions in which she was being held. Furthermore, they also revealed the negotiations between Mary and Elizabeth I to secure her release.
The now-decoded writings provide a glimpse into what the Queen was thinking and feeling during her captivity, and offer a unique opportunity to better understand Mary Stuart's history and role in the context of 16th-century Europe.
