I love how the Firebird pickup sounds on the Melody Maker SG, but I noticed that, like most humbuckers, it gets muddy when turned down for cleaner sounds.
One of my favourite mods is installing a treble bleed circuit in the volume pot, but I never recorded a before & after clip. I think the difference is pretty noticeable (and even more drastic playing through a real amp)
My main amp is a single channel Marshall JMP 2203, so I'm used to doing clean sounds by rolling down the volume pot. In my experience, most humbuckers benefit from the treble bleed, but P90s usually clean up great without it. Disconnecting the tone pots (like I always do) helps too.
