北-말레이 외교관계 악화, 44년 우방...김정남 암살로 '파열음'
Malaysia's recalled Ambassador to North Korea expressed confidence his country's investigation into that case is being conducted in an objective and fair manner.
This was his response to the regime openly criticizing one of its few allies over the matter.
Park Ji-won tells us more.
Malaysia's Ambassador to North Korea, Mohamad Nizan Mohamad, who has been recalled by his home country, said Tuesday that his country's investigation into Kim Jong-nam's death is being conducted in a professional manner... that's objective and fair to everyone.
The ambassador also reiterated that the investigation is impartial, saying the Malaysian government has no reason to take sides.
He was speaking to journalists at Beijing's main airport, en route back to Malaysia.
Malaysia recalled its ambassador from North Korea Monday after the North's own ambassador in Kuala Lumpur claimed Malaysia's probe cannot be trusted -- that other powers are behind it -- and... after he demanded a joint investigation.
Malaysia's foreign ministry criticized the North's diplomatic behavior, calling the remarks not only false and deluded,... but saying they also tarnish Malaysia's reputation.
This is the lowest point in their bilateral relations since Malaysia and North Korea estabilshed diplomatic ties back in 1973.
After years of relatively friendly relations, the two countries opened embassies in their respective capitals in 2003.
They even signed a reciprocal visa-free deal for visitors in 2009,... under which Malaysia remains the only country in the world that allows North Koreans to visit without a visa.
