Its a whole lot easier to do service work on a tractor if you put the loader mainframe up in the air. But, I don't recommend doing that and standing under it unless you take the tip that I give in this video.
That's because hydraulic systems will let gravity control a loader, if the lever that controls it is moved, even without the tractor running. Let's say you're working on the tractor and your kitty cat decides to lean on the joystick. When the loader control is moved forward it allows oil to flow through the system, and, with the weight of the loader frame pushing against it, the loader can come down, right on top of you!
Well, you say, my loader joystick control has a safety mechanism that allows it to lock in position so no one, not even the kitty cat, can push it while I'm underneath it. Most loader control valves have that, I just don't totally trust it. That's because you have the weight of the loader pushing against the oil, and if there were a sudden hose failure, the mainframe could still come down. That's highly unlikely, but I don't trust "unlikely".
I have a solution in this video that will keep your loader up in the air and you safe while working on it. It's something that I learned from the guys in the shop at the dealership I worked at, they would NEVER work on a tractor with the loader up in the air without this mechanism in place. This solution costs next to nothing, if you're a guy that works with metal you can probably make it out of scrap for free. It will keep your loader up in the air and you safe working underneath it. Do not work underneath the loader without it in place.
