Description
The rose-ringed parakeet, also known as the ring-necked parakeet is a medium-sized true parrot. It is named for the red and black neck ring of the male. Females and juveniles may have a faint shadow-like ring or none at all.
Wild rose-ringed parakeets sport a green plumage but there are several color mutations among captive-bred birds, including blue, violet, turquoise, and yellow. There are two African subspecies and two Asian subspecies.
Vocalizations: Call and song
Ring-necks are noisy birds. Common calls include a high-pitched, whining kiiyak and a short croaking krrrrk. In captivity, they can mimic human-made noises, including speech.
Distribution and range
They are native to central Africa and South Asia. Due to the exotic pet trade, feral colonies have established themselves in many countries outside their native range, including parts of Europe.
Habitat
Ring-necked parakeets inhabit open forests, jungles, savannah, thickets, and even semi-desert areas. They are remarkably well-adapted around human habitations and developed areas and can be found in cultivated lands, urban and suburban parks, and gardens.
Diet and feeding habits
Rose-ringed parakeets are herbivorous, and their diet comprises seeds, nuts, buds, berries, and fruit. They also frequent parks, gardens, and backyard feeders. Feral flocks also forage orchards and cultivated lands, where they cause considerable crop damage.
Nesting and breeding
They nest in tree holes, crevices, and sometimes the nests of other birds. Females lay up to four eggs which are incubated for around 23 days. The nestlings fledge about 42 days after hatching.
Relationship with humans
Rose-ringed parakeets are popular exotic pets and are among the most commonly kept house parrots.
Status and conservation
The rose-ringed parakeet is a highly adaptable species, able to thrive in a multitude of environments and climates, including developed areas. As such, it is resilient against deforestation and other forms of habitat loss. It is classified as “least concern” by the IUCN.
