I give the worst Christmas presents! I ordered some light prisms from Donguan City, north of Hong Kong, to re-create part of Isaac Newton's light experiment, called the ‘refraction of light’, where he discovered that white visible light is composed from a spectrum of colours, situated in between the infrared and ultra-violet scale of vibration. Instead of cutting a hole in a curtain to let in some daylight, I used a ray of light from a mag light. As light passes through glass, it gets slowed down, which widens the distance between the photons (massless particles of light). The light that passes through the thicker part of the glass gets gradually more stretched out, and will separate from the violet towards the red side of the spectrum. I know I could have put a bit more effort into this impromptu vid, since I realize how many people are passionate about physics and have responded to this video.
