Hello everybody and welcome back to my YouTube channel, here we are on our way to the island of St. Estevam in the village of Juven. This island got its name ‘Ilha do Santo Estevao or ‘Island of St Stevens’, after it was conquered by the Portuguese on December 26, 1510, Since this date coincided with the feast of the first martyr of the church, that’s St Stephen, This island was named the “Ilha do Santo Estevao”. The feast of st steven is celebrated in a grand way by the villagers till this day. Santo Estêvão is perhaps the only village in Goa where the Catholic community celebrates three feasts in a row - Christmas on 25 December, Feast of St Stephen, the patron of the Church on 26 December and Feast of Christ the King on 27 December. The villagers were known as tarvotti (seafarers). While the Portuguese wooden ships were fixed at the Cumbharjua canal, villagers of St Estevam would be recruited to substitute for those who had died on these ships due to scurvy. The villagers of this island were originally Hindus, until people saw the beauty of the church and chose to convert to Christianity in the 1550s. Sampur Santu, a Gaonkar (villager) was one of the first to convert in 1555. After the conversion of the villagers to Christianity, the Jesuits built the church in 1575. It was dedicated to St. Stephen (Santo Estevao) Christianity was brought into the village by the Jesuit missionaries in 1550s. They built the church here in 1575; the biggest churches built by them during those times and dedicated it to St Stephen.
So to tell you something interesting The villagers of this island were originally Hindus, and it was around this time where the Jesuit missionaries had come to Goa including st Francis Xavier who came in the year 1542. St Francis Xavier had the gift of tongues where everybody would be able to understand what he was preaching. His sermons so beautiful that he would preach the gospel with so much conviction, that these people would just choose to convert their lives. So the people of the village saw the beauty of the church and chose to convert to Christianity in the 1550s. A villager named Sampur Santu, was one of the first to convert in 1555. The villagers of st estave had so much faith in God and they knew that nobody could destroy church. So they rebuilt the church again in 1759, today the church is still standing and it is one of the largest churches present in Goa
Just next to this fort is a beautiful The statue of “Christ The King" which was brought from Rome in the year 1926, This statue was brought by Father Antonio Leandro Roberto Da Rosa who was the son of this village
The statue was installed at this very hill on 16th of December 1926. The island Santo Estêvão is perhaps the only village in Goa where the villagers celebrates three feasts in a row at a grand scale - Christmas on 25 December, Feast of St Stephen, on 26 December and Feast of Christ the King on 27 December.
