From porgies to fluke, to stripers and blues, you should have no trouble bending a rod this weekend, especially if you are willing to travel to where the action is best for the species you are targeting.
Porgy catches remain off the charts in places like Peconic Bay and Cherry Harbor at Gardiners Island, but the scup are also coming on strong now in Long Island Sound.
Fluking in the South Shore bays has been solid if you work the tides, and good catches are also coming from the ocean. Some good fishing was also reported from the Central North Shore this week.
The best striper fishing seems to have spread east as the action slowed in Jamaica Bay and environs. South Shore inlets are yielding numbers of quality fish, particularly Fire Island, and Montauk appeared to be right on schedule as the bass action took off on Memorial Day Weekend. Quality stripers are still falling to live and chunked bunker in the Western Sound.
Blues are everywhere according to almost everyone we spoke to this week – except along the North Shore where the choppers have yet to show in any appreciable numbers, but expect that to change any day now.
There’s still time to enter the Suffolk Marine Anglers Striped Bass Tournament based out of the Babylon Village Dock this Sunday. You can register at the captains’ meeting tonight at Miller’s Ale House in Deer Park from 7:30 to 9 p.m. or at Suffolk Marine in Babylon until 5 p.m. on Friday.
