The Japanese Maple (Acer). These trees are deciduous, which means they drop all their leaves in the winter and enter a dormant stage. So just as the leaves have fallen I like to do the structural pruning as it's much easier when they are leafless. On all my deciduous trees I like to check the roots before the winter and do a bit of untangling and tidying and repot them ready for their rest time. I don't do any major root pruning this time of year and save that for the spring,
