Although quantum computers are still not yet able to successfully break common encryption protections, many experts fear they will be able to do so in the foreseeable future. There are also concerns about retrospective decryption of stolen information, which could severely affect international stability, as nation-states rush to gain intelligence advantage over rivals. While there is severe disagreement on how much it will take for quantum computers to be able to break encryption protocols, the debate on how to tackle post quantum cryptography has to happen well in advance. Several states, multistakeholder organizations and private companies are taking notes and investing in research on how to integrate post-quantum cryptography into existing protocols.
