This stuff is actually pretty cool. This is really thin just like regular contact paper. The underside is paper with a grid to make measuring out even squares easy. You can trace out the shape that you want on the backing piece and then that chalk board paper just peels right off.
I have tried placing this paper on multiple surfaces and peeled off and there was no residue left behind. I tried on drywall, glass, doors, wood, etc. No residue and it is easy to lay and then peel off and fix the positioning. Just like laying any sticky paper, you can get some air bubbles while laying this but you can peel up and re-lay or push those air bubbles out. On glass especially it is pretty easy to get a smooth surface with a little bit of effort.
I have made a chalk board using a picture frame and a wood cut-out chalk board. It works pretty much just like a regular chalk board. I have tested mine with both chalk and a chalk marker. Both work well and a couple of pieces of chalk actually comes along with this paper. When wiping off with a dry rag or towel, it smudges quite a bit and doesn’t come off too cleanly. You can use a wet cloth with this paper and it will wipe off very nicely.
This can be placed directly on your wall or directly on cabinets, etc. If you have a textured wall this will not work well. The paper is very thin and any lumps or texture can be seen right through it and will prevent you from writing smoothly. On a surface that has some texture, like a standard interior door, it does apply smoothly and cover well. You could really use this in a lot of different ways. My picture frame chalk board is my favorite thing that I have done with it. It was easy and came out really nicely. This applies smoothly on glass. It looks cute and is definitely displayable. I plan to make more of these and some chalk board labels for toys bins and organizing in my house. This is great to use on the inside of a cupboard door for a shopping list. After making a few projects I still have plenty on my roll to work with. You can use stencils to cut out into any decorative design that you want. This stuff works pretty well!
