Planting a Cornus Alba Sibirica Elegantissima, commonly known as the Red Dogwood, in the garden is a fantastic way to add some brilliant and spectacular colour for the Winter. This stunning shrub is deciduous, but before it loses its leaves they turn gorgeous shades of orange and red, but it’s crowning glory are the vibrant red stems throughout the Winter. The Red Dogwood has white flowers in May and June, then fruits in July and August which are great for attracting wildlife. The Cornus is not toxic to any humans, pets or wildlife which is a bonus. It’s very hardy, growing in any type of soil, in any aspect, although avoid North facing as it looks it’s very best in full sun which shows it’s bright red stems the best. Can grow 1.5m tall but cut the stems 2-3 inches from the ground every March to keep those stems red every year. It really is a fabulous addition to any garden.
