Steel bikes, we all remember them, classic lines, and bombproof Chromoly. Long before carbon, and even before suspension existed, it was the inherent compliance of steel that damped the ride. There was simply no other material that could better the feel of steel. Sure, in recent years aluminium alloys have become ubiquitous thanks to their strength to weight ratio, but, light does not always mean comfortable, alloy is stiff, and even of the bravest of manufacturers knew that they had to keep steel up front to keep the ride quality reasonable.
But what if you're all about exploring and comfort, and outright weight isn't the main factor in choosing a bike - like for example you're in the gravel arena.
We are seeing a renaissance of Steel Gravel bikes - where prolonged exposure to rough unsealed roads suits this frame material perfectly, and, Marin has been at the forefront of this. Building on their reputation of great classic steel bikes like the bear valley, Marin has produced the Nicasio, a steel endurance gravel bike that combines the great suppleness of steel together with modern-day essentials such as updated geometry and features such as through axles and disc brakes. Where the Gestalt X is for those looking for speed on and off-road and the Nicasio is built for comfort, for those avid adventurers and wirely commuters - offering a more upright position and more versatility with frame storage already designed into the frame. There are rack mounts everywhere on this bike on the top and bottom of the downtube, seat tube, rack mounts front rear and lastly mounts for mudguards allowing you to customise your bike packing setup. The geometry of the bike also sets it apart from other steel bikes. The Nicasio uses Marins Beyond road geometry, which is comfortable and confident both on and off-road.
We have two models of the Nicasio, the Plus and the Urban. Both models are built around the award-winning Series 1 Double Butted CrMo frame. What sets the Nicasio Plus apart from the Urban is the spec, showing how adaptable the frame is. The Plus is designed to be the ultimate adventure bike. This is thanks to the WTB Horizon, 650B by 47-millimetre tyre. The huge volume in combination with the compliant frame led to the plus winning Path Less Pedalled most supple bike in 2019. The choice to use a 1x drivetrain is also a highlight. It's simple, reliable and thanks to the clutch on the Microshift advent derailleur and FSA narrow-wide chainring you will have plenty of chain retention on the roughest road. Often unseen on gravel bikes it also has an 11-46t cassette, compared to the 11-42 which gives a little bit extra room to make it up the steepest climbs with ease, which is very beneficial on multi-day trips to save the legs. The inclusion of mechanical discs can't be overstated, as they provide more control, power, and consistency in all conditions, who don't like that.
The Urban is tailored for those who want a comfortable commuter or leisure bike, and are looking to get up to some slightly higher speeds. The 2x8 Shimano Claris drivetrain offers a higher top speed and range than a standard 1x drivetrain. The faster-rolling VeeTire, Apache Chief, 700 by 30c tyres are also a tip of the cap towards its high-speed credentials
Again this just highlights how adaptable the Marin beyond road range is, change the tyres and you have 2 completely different bikes.
If you are looking for an adaptable bike to commute, bike pack, and adventure then the Marin Nicasio is the bike for you.
