Post-Registration Audits!
Just because you got a trademark, doesn't mean that you can keep your trademark -- unless you can prove that you're still using it on ALL the goods and services listed!
The USPTO has rolled out a program where they randomly audit trademark owners when they renew their trademarks. They ask for proof of use of the trademark in conjunction with certain goods and services. If the trademark owner can't prove that use, then the trademark owner must pay $250 to strike that class of goods and services from the trademark registry.
If the trademark registrant does not comply, then the mark is not renewed, and the trademark is abandoned.
This is another example of stricter new rules and policies implemented by the USPTO to ensure that applicants and registrants follow the rules, and don't claim "use" on goods and services with which they are not actually using the trademark.
Remember that trademark rights are acquired through actual use of the trademark in commerce. If you're not using -- or intending to use -- the trademark on the goods and services listed, then there's no reason for you to have a trademark in the first place, or to be granted the right to continue to use the trademark you have registered.
Trademark renewals happen at the first 5 years, and thereafter at every 10 years, and registrants should be prepared to defend their assertion that they continue to use the trademark on all of the goods and services listed in the trademark application or registration.
