Mid-December is Saturnalia, an ancient Roman paganism festival dedicated to the agricultural deity Saturn. Saturnalia celebrations are the origin of many of the customs we now associate with Christmas, such as wreaths, candles, feasting, and gift-giving, due to the holiday's timing—close to the winter solstice. Work and business ceased during Saturnalia. The usual social norms were suspended, and schools and courts were shuttered.
People replaced their customary togas with colorful clothing known as synthesis and decorated their homes with garlands and other greenery. Even slaves were free to enjoy Saturnalia without having to work; in some instances, they even sat at the head of the table while their masters served them.
Romans celebrated Saturnalia by gambling, singing, playing music, dining, mingling, and exchanging presents with one another. #pagan #solstice #saturnalia
