Brief discussion of the book, 'The History of the Psychoanalytic Movement' by Sigmund Freud (1914). This book was published when Freud was about 58 years old. He was seeing at the same time (1) the increasing popularity of psychoanalysis across the world and (2) that some of the influential figures in the movement (e.g., Jung and Adler) were parting ways with him.
I should have included in the discussion: the beginning of psychoanalysis is taken to be with the abandoning of hypnosis and replacing it with the method of free association. The reason is has to do with the centrality of 'repression' in psychoanalysis and how free association is more suited to detecting repressions.
We also read in this book Freud's ideas of how psychoanalysis is developing and transforming in the hands of Alfred Adler, Carl G. Jung, and others.
