STORYLINE
Bangladesh and Pakistan agreed on Monday to conclude a free trade agreement by September 2006, Pakistan's prime minister said.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and Khaleda Zia, who on Sunday became the first Bangladeshi prime minister to travel to Pakistan for a bilateral meeting in 12 years, oversaw the signing of agreements on cooperation in agriculture, science and technology and tourism.
Aziz and Zia, also held talks in the Pakistani capital Islamabad on cooperation in defence, ecurity and promotion of trade between their two countries.
"We have agreed today in principle to finalise the FTA (free trade agreement) between the two countries no later than September 30 this year so that trade between the two countries can expand," Aziz said at a joint press conference with Zia following their meeting.
"We want to buy more goods from Bangladesh. We want more investment into Bangladesh from Pakistani entrepreneurs," he said.
Pakistan enjoys a huge trade imbalance with neighbouring Bangladesh.
Zia will also meet with President General Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday before she returns home, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.
"We are happy that these contacts have given fresh momentum to the process of cooperation between our two countries," Zia said of her talks with Aziz and other Pakistani officials.
Neither Aziz nor Zia made any reference to whether they discussed the fate of 250,000 Bihari refugees in Bangladesh who want to come to Pakistan.
The Biharis were among hundreds of thousands who fled to East Pakistan after the division of the Indian subcontinent in 1947.
East Pakistan became Bangladesh after winning a war of independence in 1971.
Pakistan accepted some refugees - who opposed Bangladesh's independence - until 1993 when the immigration process was halted by authorities in Islamabad.
The refugees remain in dozens of dirty refugee camps across Bangladesh with high unemployment and no voting rights.
