I'm still working on my InterCity Sun coaches. Now that I have corrected the red stripes on all the coaches, I have gone back to recreate a couple of modern Sicilian InterCity trains.
Currently, Sicilian InterCity trains leave Siracusa and Palermo in the morning, then head north, across the train ferry to mainland Italy arriving at Northern destimations in the evening. A mirror set of expresses leave Northern Italy in the morning. A set of night services also run.
The Sicilian portions tend to be four coaches (or two sets of four coaches run as one eight). There is also a Frecciabianca express service that is five coach.
Over the last couple of years, motive power has changed from E656s locos in XMPR colours to single ended E464s in InterCIty Sun colours. Sometimes there are two E464s on a train (top and tail).
This video represents the transition time (c2019), when you could see an E656s and E464d running together- there are even instances of E656s hauling trains with new UIC-Z1a pilot coaches (though not in push/pull mode- E464s still can't do this, I think).
My Riva E656 isn't quite right- it should have the green / red Trenitalia logo and additional front handrails- however, it is fairly close. In real life, the vinyl would have been hanging off.
It is hauling a Roco series 1 Gran Confort coach, Roco DB BPMZ converted by me into a representation of a UIC-Z BH, Roco Eurofima and ACME UIC-Z Pilota Z. I repainted all but the Pilota- all the coaches were damaged or needed saving, so no pristine coaches were harmed for this!
Here is a similar rake in real life: [ Ссылка ]
The other train is my ViTrains E464 loco in InterCity Sun colours. It is hauling a Lima Expert Gran Confort 2nd Series and three Lima UIC-Zs. All are repainted by me. The Lima Expert coach was from an XMPR red stripe pack and picked up very cheaply. One UIC-Z is an ex-1st class coach converted into a 2nd class open coach. I don't think there are many (or any?) of these regularly in Sicily, though it is not implausible. It was either this coach or a standard second class coach with the ex-Frecciabianca white roof. The ex- 1st class was a better fit.
I find these short Sicilian expresses quite entertaining- especially seeing an E464 on top link work. They are also good to model, as you can create a full rake for a fairly reasonable cost, and run them on small, twisting layouts!
