In 1974 author Peter Benchley published Jaws a novel about a great white shark terrorising the fictional long island beach down. A year later this was turned into a hit film of the same name which captivated audiences and resulted in a generation being terrified of what was lurking below the waves. However, this tale of fiction was inspired by real events which were much more terrifying and which occurred over the space of 12 days in July 1916 when a shark attacked 5 people off the coast of the state of New Jersey, only one survived. Three of these attacks occurred in the space of just an hour and a half.
This is a case which shows that truth is stranger than fiction and reality is often more terrifying than fantasy.
