The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was a German World War II fighter aircraft designed by Willy Messerschmitt and Robert Lusser during the early to mid-1930s.
It was one of the first true modern fighters of the era, including such features as an all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, and retractable landing gear.
The Bf 109 was used by the Luftwaffe, the air force of Nazi Germany, throughout World War II and was one of the most successful fighter aircraft of the war.
It was flown by many of the top aces of the war, including Erich Hartmann, the highest scoring fighter pilot in history.
