Prior to speaking about the death of George Floyd and the recent violent protests in Minneapolis in response to his death, city council vice-president and councillor Andrea Jenkins on Thursday sang a portion of “Amazing Grace.”

She then went on to say that the black community throughout America “feel as if there was a knee on all of our collective necks." Floyd died on Monday in Minneapolis after an officer knelt on his neck for several minutes until he became unresponsive.

She also called on the mayor to declare a state of emergency, and to declare racism as a public health issue.
