Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida has been chosen by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as his attorney general.

While Republicans have a majority in the Senate after the election, Gaetz may still have a rocky path to confirmation. Several Republican senators were surprised at his nomination to the post and all Democrats are likely to oppose him.

He would replace AG Merrick Garland. Trump's administration has previously accused Garland of taking aim at Republicans as he led a sex-trafficking investigation into the Gaetz, which the Department of Justice dropped.
