This game is a simulation that allows you to build and take care of a Dwarf Fort. Every character has a unique personality that evolves as you play the game and give them tasks to do. Dwarf's or dwarves (depending on the subject matter(dwarfs warhammer/dwarves lord of the rings and elder scrolls) have their own skills that they can use to learn and grow. Skilled dwarves can even make legendary items which come with a unique name and make everyone who sees or uses the object happy. What can happen is you can have a temple or a bar full of legendary items and this will encourage dwarves to work harder and keep them cheerful. This has the side effect of creating a Fey Mood which is how legendary items are made! That is just one system contained within this game. The other is work orders which can be as complicated or simple as you desire. You can create a task such as mine this area and depending on the settings you could have a particular dwarf complete the task or ask anyone not busy to work on the task. Keep in mind the more a dwarf does the better they get at it so it can be a good idea to specialise your characters. Another could be this, as long as there are less than 10 drinks available then someone will perform a task such as brew 50 drinks and that will only activate when a condition is met. You could select a specific dwarf to do this or have anyone available do it. Even a peasant dwarf can perform work orders and they'll gain experience while they do so!

Another part of this game is the Director. Like Rimworld which came after it, Dwarf Fortress has a game director that will send random events your way. These could be traders from other races (humans and elves), migrants from a dwarf hold, goblin raiders, or even titans and mythical beasts which all have a history in the randomly generated world you play in. This means no two games will ever be alike and this is where the gameplay lies. Embark in different territories, fight battles and send raids, mine and craft mythical items, brew countless beverages, cook countless meals, and most importantly develop a story in your head as dwarfs live out their lives. Think of yourself as a benevolent leader (or not!) and manage your dwarves (or dwarfs!) as you see fit. You never know what could happen!
