I discuss whether PhD supervisors get paid to work with PhD students. Most PhD supervisors do not get directly paid for working with PhD students, but they get paid indirectly when they publish more papers and get more research grants. PhD students help you get more papers published.

However, most PhD advisers don’t do it for the explicit reasons, but they do so for the implicit motivation of seeing somebody develop as a person and as a researcher in their field. It is very motivating to see doctoral students develop research which you started early on in your career and grow the field.
