This undocumented immigrant mother has been resisting ICE from inside a church for over two years. But now ICE may have found a new way to get her out of the church.

Edith Espinal entered this church in Ohio in October 2017. She is now one of the longest church sanctuary cases in the U.S.

Edith Espinal has three children — two were born in the United States, and one in Mexico. Before the deportation order she had lived in the U.S. for 21 years, working, taking care of her children, and doing her taxes. Edith sought asylum in the U.S. but it was ultimately denied.

"ICE officials told me that I had a deportation order in August 2017, and they put an ankle monitor on me and let me leave that day. When they put the ankle monitor on me I felt– I felt as if I had no life. I felt so much shame. It was very hard because when I got out my kids were crying, my daughter especially. Because I have always fought to keep my family together, and that day I felt anger. And that’s when we talked and we made the decision that we are going to start looking for a church to take sanctuary," said Edith.

Edith is one of the 50 public sanctuary cases in the U.S. Like most in sanctuary, she spends most of the days by herself.

Now, ICE agents have warned Edith to leave the church or be faced with fines and criminal charges that would possibly hand her case to law enforcement who may arrest people in sanctuary like Edith. Edith is one of 7 women who’ve received letters from ICE.
